Potential Bike-Share App for Tri-Cities

The City of Coquitlam is in talks with bike-sharing app U-bicycle to bring its service to the city, and hopefully to Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, too.

No date has been set or firm commitments made, but both parties are positive about the project. While a similar bike-sharing project in Vancouver, Mobi, has received millions of dollars from the city, U-bicycle is not asking Coquitlam for money.

U-bicycle’s bikes also don’t need docking stations as they are self-locking and tracked by GPS and Bluetooth. This means they can be parked anywhere, adding to the scheme’s convenience. Using the bikes costs users $1 per 30 minutes, which can be paid via Visa, PayPal or Swipe.

The company already offers its service in the BC capital Victoria, where there are currently 400 of its bright green bikes. U-bicycle has also established its North American headquarters in Vancouver.
